When the Painful Past is the Painful Present

By Kathy Broady MSW 64 Comments

Hello, how are you today?  Are you reading from your painful past, or are you here, in a painful present?  Does it feel like the here-and-now?  Or the way back when?  Or is Then the same as Now? I've been thinking about this topic of Past vs Present for awhile now.  I know I have written about time distortion, memory recall, flashbacks, body memories, trauma processing and all those things before.  (Please … [Read more...]

Switching in Your Sleep -– Are you Snoozing or Secretly Awake?

By Kathy Broady MSW 81 Comments

In situations where dissociative survivors feel like they don’t lose time, it can be helpful to ask a lot of questions about how they experience life, time, recall, etc.  There are a wide variety of reasons why systems get so tightly shut down from switching, (or from the appearance of switching), so it really depends on what else is going on.  There could be other ways that the insiders are coming out, and for … [Read more...]

Do Dissociative Trauma Survivors Actually Lose Time?

By Kathy Broady MSW 55 Comments

One of the diagnostic criteria for Dissociative Identity Disorder is experiencing amnesia or lost time.  While losing time may seem like an obvious hole in your every day life, it really might not be as obvious as it seems it could be. For dissociative trauma survivors, the sliding of time is a normal everyday way of life.  It just is how it is, and time feels very different for DID survivors than it does for other … [Read more...]

Where Did I Put My Keys?

By Kathy Broady MSW 12 Comments

Last night I lost my keys in the office.   It was a silly ordeal – they were hanging right where I last put them – but it took me awhile to remember where that was. I had a little help finding them, and I am really thankful that Mr. Janitor Man was so very kind.  He was patient with me, looking everywhere with me while I retraced my steps of the evening.  We looked under couches, in between cushions, under … [Read more...]

Picturing a Group of Insiders – a Dissociative System

By Kathy Broady MSW 13 Comments

describing Dissociative Identity Disorder

Isn’t this an interesting picture of Dissociative Identity Disorder?!     Assuming the artist of this picture is a trauma survivor with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID / MPD), this drawing shows many of the system insiders.  I can't say that I know this person has DID for sure -- meaning -- I haven't met the artist, I haven't met their inside people, I haven't met the treatment team, and I … [Read more...]
