National Puzzle Day – puzzles are for DID!

By Kathy Broady MSW 4 Comments

It’s National PUZZLE Day!

As you know, there are PUZZLE PIECES in everything that Discussing Dissociation does.  I understand that Autism Awareness also uses a puzzle design, but in my opinion, the puzzle piece is the perfect metaphor for Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID/mpd).

How does the puzzle fit with DID?

Dissociative folks and puzzles connect together because DIDer’s:

  • have many puzzling questions about a zillion different topics!
  • have trouble putting the whole picture together.
  • have had the need for dissociative walls which break the pieces apart from each other.
  • feel split and divided into various pieces, even in themselves.
  • feel connected but uniquely separated at the same time.
  • have to solve mysteries or “puzzles” about why things are like they are.
  • have unique insiders who have their own look, same as with each individual puzzle piece.
  • can have systems expanded with lots and lots of different pieces, or have just a few pieces.
  • don’t feel whole if there are pieces missing.

Did you ever read the article explaining the Puzzle Pieces Metaphor?  This one says it best:    Puzzle Pieces Metaphor for DID

History Lane…..

I have a long, long history with puzzle pieces.  One of my very favorite memories of growing up was spending hours and hours, year after year, putting jigsaw puzzles together with my grandma.  My grandma loved her puzzles, and for as long as she could see well, she was working on one or two at all times.  Every visit, she and I would work faithfully on those puzzles, sitting quietly together, chattering about life and snacking on popcorn and cookies.

At grandma’s house, the prettiest puzzles were just too good to let go of, and it was not okay to box them back up.  Instead, my grandma glued her favorite completed puzzles to cardboard, put them in frames, and decorated her walls with her gorgeous puzzle pictures.  Her house was full of puzzles.

I’m sure that’s where my first love of puzzles began.

Years later, when I learned about Multiple Personality Disorder, which is now called Dissociative Identity Disorder, the puzzle and the puzzle piece was the obvious match.

Do you remember my original website, AbuseConsultants?  It’s not around anymore, but have a peek at the puzzle design used there.

And remember, the Broken into Pieces piano CD:

PS:  I haven’t finished the project of getting my CD ready for the public, but it’s still on the list.  I will get that completed in 2021!

Discussing Dissociation is, of course, all about puzzles.

Everywhere you look, on so many of the pictures chosen, you’ll see puzzle pieces.  There are dozens of puzzle images on this blog.

Of course, we’ve used puzzle balls to represent dissociative systems, and also the free eBook, 101+ Ways to See DID — Dissociative Identity Disorder Described is puzzled related too!   Do you have YOUR copy of this free eBook?  Sign up for the DD Newsletter to get. your free copy.

Of course, the P4 DID Conference was all about puzzles as well.

Puzzle Pieces at Discussing Dissociation

We have had many years of puzzles here at Discussing Dissociation!

So….. What’s NEW?

Today, this NATIONAL PUZZLE DAY, I’d like to show you the newest Discussing Dissociation logo.

Yep, we are changing to this new design.  I think it’s better, and more fitting.

This logo is another puzzle theme, of course, but this time, the puzzle pieces show more variation and look more like little puzzle-people.  And we’ve brought in the teal colors that are connected to this site as well.  There is more to say, but I’ll save that for later.  For now, here’s a VIDEO introduction.

Check out the video below and please let me know what you think!

I know your world is full of puzzles…

But one piece at a time, it can come back together.

Take heart.

Have courage.

You can do this.

I wish you the very very best on your healing journey.

Warmly,

Kathy

We like this!…. Our Objective’s main job is to collect Inside puzzle pieces that float up and see how stuff fits together….it is hard and time consuming because there is no picture on the lid of the puzzle box….We notice that even tiny details of stuff are important to him – it is a piece that fits “somewhere” and “makes sense” somehow…..

We are glad it is Objective’s job to work on all that – because it makes OUR head hurt!!! 🙂
